This novel was middle of the road just ok. I feel like it was for a few factors but before we get into that let me summarize it. The main character goes into a world where a select group of people are awakened and have powers related to beast taming. His previous host died by trying to forcefully strengthen his talent called deep memory. As a new host he has his own power, the ability to Simulate.
This book allows him to simulate a world for his pet where they can train for years and improve their skills, he then gets to choose a few of those factors after the pet dies in the simulator that they get to keep. This allows his pets that have no talent to become powerful because they have trained for hundreds of years longer than their peers. I think this skill is interesting, however it always felt weird to me because the character of the pets didn’t change even when they have simulated to live for such a long time and died so many times. Like I feel like the novel just keeps the good part of this where you get super trained but eliminates the negative parts which always bothered me.
The book also allows him to simulate the pets life in the real world which allows him to play out his own future given what he chooses. This gives him a prediction ability which helps him avoid a lot of danger. This ability is somewhat limited and he is able to get an ability from his pet pretty much every time he uses it. I have mixed feelings about this ability. I kinda like it in the fact it removes some random plot armor and in a more logical way avoids danger. However at the same time it feels like his world is way too dangerous where he is always going to die. It makes me question how anyone stays alive in this world if they don’t have this ability because he never seems to live that long whenever he predicts his own future doing a relatively normal job.
My favorite part off beast taming stories is the relationships built between the main character and the pets. Because of how the simulator only works for the pets I feel like their isn’t a close connection between himself and the pets, like I wish he would be in the simulators as well to build a better relationship with his pets. They feel more like a tool to make himself stronger vs having a trusting relationship with his pet where they are dependent on each other. Overall I am giving this story three stars. To me the story is just ok. I don’t think I will continue the story unless I don’t have anything better to read.
