This novel has an interesting combination of beast taming and martial arts. The main focus is that everyone who wants to be strong has to be a beast tamer however they also have the ability to unlock their own potentia which essentially borrows the tamed beast element to fight with martial arts. Each character only gets one beast that they start with, so it’s not a novel with many beasts. Also the novel doesn’t focus much on the beast’s character and treats them more like a tool which is disappointing for me where I really enjoy novels where the beasts have a lot of character and grow with the MC.
The main character’s unique ability allows him a few huge cheats. One cheat is his ability to combine ability cards to make them upgrade in quality. These are then used to strengthen the monster companion. The other ability allows the user to see what ingredients the monster companion needs to create the upgrade potion for the companion. It also gives him the same ability when figuring out the potion for himself to upgrade his element ability. It also gives him the typical inspect ability like all MC’s need. All of these abilities are pretty good and give him a clear advantage and upgrade path without being too overpowered. However what I am against is how open the MC is about it, like he basically just trusts everyone he knows and is blatantly open that he has these magical abilities. And everyone is just like ok we know you can do this and we won’t ask how, they are using the famous line everybody has secrets. Like really they do? Show me any other character that has any crazy secrets with awesome powers like the MC has that basically breaks the whole economy of the country.
The MC has a few close companions that stay with him throughout the story. He has his girlfriend which he meets in the orphanage and not to surprising has a mysterious background and is basically a princess. He then has to grow stronger so he can keep his girlfriend storyline which drives the MC forward for a long time in the story. He also has a best friend character that is your typical big/tall comic relief character where his beast companion is a turtle. He openly uses his abilities to help them, which I can be ok with, but then he helps his whole class and doesn’t even come up with a decent excuse, and everybody doesn’t care and just accepts it.
I like the story overall. I just have a few things that bother me, like how open the MC is about his abilities. Also each chapter is really short, and five chapters basically equal one chapter which really bugs me with thinking the story is longer than actually is. I am going to give it 3 stars, there is nothing really original and everything just goes on the normal light novel script.
