I have really enjoyed reading Detective from the Future novel. This novel is a detective novel where our main character is a criminal investigator that picks up different cases to solve. His cheat ability helps him to be a better police man but is not that powerful and isn’t in the novel much. The novel plot and storyline made me feel like I was watching a CSI or Law and Order show in book form. Where you have a format of each case that was like an episode of 10 to 20 chapters with him solving the case. Outside of that you have some basic plot where the MC is interacting with his friends and family, getting a girlfriend and just living a normal life.
The MC cheat ability is pretty basic, he gets a police badge from the future by accident. This police badge allows him to trade merit points he gets by solving cases for some investigative skills. So he learns basic skills like footprint identification and micro expressions for lie detecting. But he doesn’t interact with the system in the badge that often after the first like 100 chapters and just uses the skills he has, we never learn all the skills he can get and only gets a few skills gifted to him after solving cases like learning languages. I honestly liked reading a novel that didn’t really depend on a system much, I do wish it was a little bit better explained instead of just forgotten about.
The police cases that he has to solve are basic but enjoyable. It’s a classic detective story of following the clues to solve the case. They sometimes get confessions out of the guilty party more often than I like but besides that I really like it. It definitely feels like I am watching a CSI episode while reading and it is almost like a guilty pleasure where I am staying entertained even though it’s just a different crime solved every 20 chapters or so. There is a little bit of racism in the novel but for a Chinese novel it’s not that bad and it only lasts a few chapters. Overall I think the story is a good guilty pleasure detective story and I am going to give it 4 stars.
