Sword God in a World of Magic

Sword God in a World of Magic

At first I thought the novel was interesting, I thought the God character was fun and witty, and I liked his attitude towards the world being pissed that magic took over everything. However I have a hard time reading the novel without cringing. In order for the main character to become stronger he is constantly destroying his body and hurting himself. Like at the beginning of his training to become stronger he jumps off trees and breaks his whole body over and over to become stronger. The book tries to explain it because he was an MMA fighter and has gone through hard training but really and that’s just the beginning.

Later in the novel he gets a magical power where he can use his arm to use powers but everytime he uses his power he destroys his arm and then he recovers it. To me he feels like the kid in My Hero Academia Izuku Midoriya, every time he uses too much of his power destroys his arms. However it’s not just when he uses too much power but every time he uses his power. Like how is that sustainable. Later on he even goes through surgery and replaces his bone marrow without any medication to help with the pain. Like my body hurts just reading this, it just feels unrealistic and unnecessary.

Outside of the crazy pain I like the story, fighting scenes, plot and world building. The main character grows stronger through hard work and training, I just don’t want his training to be so unrealistic on the pain side. It also feels like the magicians are a little too overpowered but we will see how that progresses. I am currently at chapter 202, with all of this in mind I am going to give it 3 stars, I want to give it more but I just can’t the pain he haves to go and at the same time it isn’t reflected in his character makes it so I can’t give it a higher score.
